In the world of tech giants, many CEOs are known for their brash confidence and headline-grabbing personas. Tobias “Tobi” Lütke, however, is a refreshing outlier.
A self-taught programmer from Germany who fell in love with Canada and quietly transformed the world of e-commerce, Tobi’s story is one of resilience, curiosity, and staying true to one’s values—even at the top.
A curious mind from Koblenz
Born in 1981 in Koblenz, a small city in West Germany, Tobi’s childhood was anything but traditional. Diagnosed with dyslexia, he struggled in school and often felt out of place in a rigid academic environment. But while the classroom posed challenges, computers became his refuge.
At the age of 11, he received his first computer—a Commodore 64—from his parents. Instead of using it just for games, Tobi became obsessed with understanding how it worked. He began rewriting the code for video games to customize how they played, unknowingly laying the groundwork for a future in software engineering.
By his teens, Tobi was teaching himself to code in a variety of languages and even modifying open-source software—an early sign of his deep love for tinkering and building.
From snowboard store to tech empire
After moving to Canada in 2002 to be with his future wife, Tobi settled in Ottawa and soon co-founded an online snowboard shop called Snowdevil.
The goal was simple: Sell snowboards. But Tobi quickly realized the e-commerce platforms available at the time were clunky, limiting, and far too complicated for small business owners.
So, he built his own. What began as a practical solution turned into something much bigger.
In 2006, Tobi and his co-founders pivoted and launched Shopify, an e-commerce platform that prioritized elegant design, ease of use, and empowering entrepreneurs. They weren’t just building a tool—they were democratizing online business.
Point of Genius
One of Tobi’s boldest decisions came early on: making Shopify developer-friendly and centred around Application Programming Interface (APIs).
This allowed other developers to build apps, themes, and tools that could plug into Shopify’s ecosystem—helping it scale exponentially.
While competitors focused on rigid systems, Shopify became a flexible, customizable platform tailored to the needs of entrepreneurs.
Tobi also made a key philosophical choice: betting on the long-term success of independent businesses rather than taking shortcuts to profits.
This meant resisting ads and data mining, and instead doubling down on tools and infrastructure that helped merchants succeed.
His calm, thoughtful leadership style—along with an intense focus on product and user experience—stood out in a tech industry often ruled by hype and ego.
Overhauling the system
Shopify is now used by over 1.7 million businesses in more than 175 countries.
From garage startups to global brands, it has become the backbone of modern online retail. By removing the technical and financial barriers to launching a business, Shopify made entrepreneurship more accessible than ever.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when brick-and-mortar shops were forced online, Shopify became a lifeline—enabling thousands of small businesses to survive and thrive.
And Shopify’s influence goes beyond commerce. It’s been a vocal advocate for remote work, digital privacy, and open internet values.
Under Tobi’s guidance, the company has steered clear of Silicon Valley groupthink and forged its own path from its Canadian headquarters.
Where Is Tobi Now?
In 2022, Tobi made another bold move. He stepped down as CEO and transitioned into the role of Board Chair and Product Architect.
Tobi handed the CEO title to Harley Finkelstein, his long-time colleague and Shopify’s president. But make no mistake: Tobi is still deeply involved in the vision and product direction of the company.
He also continues to be a vocal advocate for open-source software, clean energy (https://www.shopify.com/ca/blog/carbon-removal), and innovation without ego.
Tobi’s humility remains one of his defining traits. On Twitter, he’s more likely to share thoughts about coding, philosophy, or online communities than boast about business metrics.
A Legacy of Empowerment
Tobi Lütke’s journey—from a kid whose dyslexia was perceived as a weakness to the architect of one of the world’s most important tech companies—is a testament to the power of curiosity, conviction, and quiet leadership.
He didn’t set out to build a billion-dollar business. He set out to fix a problem—and ended up transforming the way the world shops.
Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone is rooted in Tobi’s belief that technology should empower, not exploit. And that belief has never wavered.
In a time when many tech leaders chase attention, Tobi reminds us that you can change the world without shouting.
